A mine explosion in western Turkey has killed 238 people, with 80 injured according to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the toll could rise with many more still trapped.
Erdogan made the announcement at a news conference during a visit
to the western town of Soma – the location of the disaster – on Wednesday. He
added that a further 120 workers remained trapped.
Yildiz told reporters earlier in the day that 787 workers had been in the Soma mine when the explosion hit a power unit. Most of the confirmed dead were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, Yildiz added. The death toll in the mine disaster has grown to 232 and hundreds more are still trapped underground. Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz updated the death toll and number of missing after earlier saying 787 people were inside the coal mine at the time of the accident and 363 of of them had been rescued. He said 80 mine workers were injured, at least four of them in serious condition. He said most of the deaths were from carbon monoxide poisoning, and those trapped were nearly 500 yards underground.."Time is working against us," Yildiz said. Meanwhile police fired tear gas and water cannon at about 800 protesters angered by the disaster as they tried to march from a university in Ankara to the energy ministry.
